Does any Megafauna still exist?
The world and its birth are still a mystery, even modern science can not find the reason behind the birth of this Universe and how life was created on Earth. It is a complex thing to understand.
At the beginning of life, the ecology and the wildlife are not the same as we are seen today. The living organisms and their way of living are completely different. We can not guess it exactly. Some of the major scientific research and study explains about Some animals are becoming extinct for a long back. Some report says due to the huge and powerful destruction the living organism of that era has become extinct.
What Do you mean by Megafauna?
Megafauna is large animals having a huge body and mass nearly 100 kilograms to 1000 kilograms. They are both herbivorous and carnivorous megafauna- as per the mode of their diet
If we take an example, Dinosaurs are the most popular megafauna of the world. They are seen in the Mesozoic Era which is also known as “the Dinosaurs Era’ . Due to their huge size, they need more food to maintain their body. The carnivorous depends upon another living organism to fulfill its food demand whereas the herbivorous group depends upon plant products.
What caused the extinction of megafauna in the past?
In the Pleistocene Era which is nearly 50,000 to 11,500 years ago. More than 100 megafaunas completely become extinct and some are in their final stage of extinction.
There are various reasons behind the extinction of Megafauna, here are some of the main reason
Climate Change- In that era, there may be a sudden change in climatic conditions, that made the megafaunas live directly. So they have become unfriendly with the atmosphere – climate and the fall of their population gradually started. Within a small gap, they became completely extinct.
Some report also says the reason behind the extinction of the megafauna is the lack of sufficient food. Due to their size, they need more food. So the food chain was destroyed and failed to fulfill the demand of the megafauna. There is a also chance of mass killing of the megafauna by humans. That may be another reason for megafauna’s extinction.
Does any Megafauna still exist?
As per the report still, there some megafauna exist on the earth. They are – Elephants, Hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, Giraffes, etc. They are mostly found in Africa region. The bad news is that: their population and growth are now in danger. Even if someone comes under the Red List of IUCN, that means they are an endangered animal. So they need protection and proper care ASAP.
