Olive Ridley Mass Nesting in Odisha started . These turtles visit the Odisha coast every year for mass nesting, traveling thousands of kilometers. This natural wonder is called Arribada.
This year, a huge number of Olive Ridley turtles have started their nesting process. According to sources, more than 6.41 lakh Olive Ridley turtles have arrived at the Rushikulya river mouth in the last few days for mass nesting.
These turtles play a crucial role in maintaining the marine ecosystem, and their return is a promising sign of a healthy habitat.
The Forest Department is taking proper care of these guests, including protecting their eggs, ensuring a safe nesting process, and ensuring the safety of the Olive Ridleys.
To ensure smooth nesting, a 5 km stretch has been fenced off, joint sea patrolling has been intensified, and nearby establishments have been urged to dim their lights until the hatchlings make their way to the sea.
The Indian Coast Guard has also come forward to protect them and has launched ‘Operation Olivia’ to safeguard Olive Ridley turtles in Odisha.
