The ‘Encyclopedia of Forest’:Meet Barefoot Padma Shri Awardee Tulasi Gowda ko
A 72-year-old tribal woman who is also known as The ‘Encyclopedia of Forest, an environmentalist from Karnataka was conferred the Padma Shri award made the whole nation feel proud.
Gowda belongs to the Halakki tribe.
She grew up in a poor tribal family and don not have any formal education due to financial and other social issues. But still, she became the Encyclopedia of Forest due to her vast knowledge of diverse species of plants and herbs.
Since the age of 12, she started her dream of plantation and nurtured thousand of trees. She has planted more than 30,000 saplings till now. She had joined as a volunteer in the forest department and was also offered a job.
On Monday for her contribution to the protection of the environment, she was conferred India’s fourth-highest civilian award from President during a ceremony in New Delhi.
