Why is the ocean salty?
The first question that arises in the mind when people discuss the sea or the ocean. There are many stories about the reason behind the salty water or the ocean.
The saltiness of the ocean water is due to various reasons. Some report says it’s because of the rocks that contain salt.
And also some report says it’s because of the rain. The rain washes the mineral ions from the land and mixed them with the ocean water. Openings on the seafloor are also a major reason for the salinity of ocean water.
The Carbon Dioxide mixed with the rainwater and made it slightly acidic. The rocks produce ions and they mixed with the rainwater and reached the ocean.
Mostly the seawater contains Sodium and chloride. Nearly 90% of ions are found in the seawater which is the main element of common salt used for cooking.
Marine plants, animals, and other organisms also contain salt in their body. After their death, it was decomposed inside the sea. The volcanoes that are present inside the sea also release salt into the seawater.
These are the major reason of the saltiness of the ocean water.
